I am going to be teaching a class on Norse Mythology in the fall, and this was part of my preparation. It does a very fine job of showing how the fatalistic philosophy of the Vikings played out in the lives of people. Eric was a great warrior because he believed that his fate was recorded long before he had been born. Therefore, if he was fated to die, he would. If he was not fated to die, then he could be as brave (and foolhardy) as he wanted to be, and nothing could stop him.

This book was written in Victorian times and, in fact, is dedicated to Queen Victoria. The prose style is different from our modern ways of writing, but it is a very interesting book.

Eric Brighteyes H Rider Haggard 9781161430127 Books Reviews

Not for me. The writing is archaic and could be hard to follow. Too much dialogue and not much exciting action. Don't get me wrong, there is plenty of fighting but reading all those pages of Eric vanquishing his foes almost effortlessly becomes tedious. The plot was linear and oh so transparent. Mostly though, it was the poor choices all the characters made over and over; especially Eric that just ruined the book for me. This book came highly recommended, I just couldn't enjoy it. The only positive thing I have to say about the book is the price free.
Excellent Read! Very much in keeping the Viking culture one would see in the Viking Sagas combined with fantastic writing..... Really beautiful stuff. Highly recommended for anyone who likes Norse culture, of Medieval Lit.
This is a very interesting book. It has plenty of action and a love story. It really makes you think once you finish it. Certain parts of it reminded me of another of Haggard's books, "The Brethren" . Well worth the read.
Great tale--hard to put down. Captures the beautiful pathos in all Nordic mythology, and creates a good sense of place.

The hardcover volume is handsome and well-crafted.
I am a big H Rider Haggard fan and this has to be one of my favorites. It is filled with action from beginning to end. It reinforces what life was like in that age. I highly recommend this book!
In my opinion this book ranks among those by William Morris. In J. R. R. Tolkien's words this book along with others by William Morris inspired his Lord of the Rings trilogy.
This is a review of the free edition. Yay for free HR Haggard!

Eric Brighteyes is a moving Viking tale of doomed love. The main characters know what their fate is as several times they are told of the plans of the Norns, but on they go to meet their destiny.

There are some really nice fight scenes, and the characters are nicely flawed.

Eric really is tough on Skallagrim, especially considering that Eric knows its his fate that leads to the death of Gudruda. He does forgive Jon quickly and easily.

237 pages - 4,185 locations. Nice work by HRH. Cute dedication to the Empress of Germany - Poor Frederick III had a really hard death.
