Outrageous Fortune should be considered essential reading for playwrights. Although there are many books that tell you how to write a play, they do a poor job of explaining the marketplace. This book reveals a great deal about contemporary theater in America from the playwright's perspective. You will learn about subsidiary rights, commissions, the emerging artist label, enhancement funds, premiere-itis, secondary productions, the importance of a New York City production, and the role of the artistic director in play selection. It is shocking how much of this information is missing from books on playwriting.There are a few important topics missing from this study; the role of the Dramatist Guild, ten minute play festivals, publishing rights, and options. Also the international market for plays was not discussed. I would like to know how London and Canada influence new play production in the United States. Fringe festivals is another topic that should have been mentioned.

Todd London and the rest of the participants of this study have long been trying to help us all understand why really new work - work that makes a difference to us all - is getting it harder and harder to make happen in the mainstream theatre companies in the US.
The irony is telling since these companies came into existence mostly in the 70s-80s for the express purpose of providing an avenue for new voices to emerge.
Here, laid out in a beautiful and inclusive study, is the story of WHY. The study includes metrics, a rationale that ties it all together, and the actual voices of hundreds of the most important people working in US theatre today.
If you work in the theatre, go to the theatre, care about the fate of the theatre and the commons, you must read this book.
Excellent and must-read for anyone involved with the business side of non-profit theatre.
It offers a different perspective that at first seems more for playwrights, but forces any artist to think critically about the inner workings of the arts business world.
